Barking Dogs

There are numerous reasons why a dog might be barking, with some breeds being more vocal by nature.

However, if a dog is barking all hours, it could be an indication that something might be wrong. If a dog is barking for more than 24 hours, appears to be left on its own and you suspect there may be neglect involved or other concerns, call the SSPCA at 03000 999 999. You will have to go through a recording with several options. To speak to someone, be sure to select the option to report a concern about the welfare of an animal or you will be directed to another recording!

Often times the local dog warden or police will refer back to the SSPCA, as they have the authority to investigate concerns about animal welfare.

In England you should contact the RSPCA at 0300 1234 999.

Before reporting excessive dog barking that is just a nuisance, it is recommended you do the following:

  • Speak informally to the dog owner about the barking or write them a letter informing how the barking disrupts your life. Avoid using blame language. Some owners may not know there is a barking problem as it may only happen at certain times, such as when the owner is out. Or the owner may be deaf and unaware of excessive barking.

  • Document the barking. Keep a record of when and for how long the barking continues. Use audio or video recordings if possible to do so safely, to be used as evidence.

If the problem persists, you can contact your local council or environmental health department, using what evidence you’ve gathered for when you make the report.

Go to this website, enter your postcode, and you’ll be directed to your local council website.

Keep in mind that each local council may have differing methods for reporting nuisance barking. Most require a complaint form to be filled out detailing information on the situation. This would be when you’d include any correspondence with the owner on the issue, the record of how often the dark barks and any other concerns.
