Stray/Abandoned Dogs

If you find a stray or abandoned dog, contact your local council Dog Warden by looking on the relevant Council website or phoning their Environmental Health Department.

Unfortunately, the SSPCA will not take in stray dogs unless they are sick or injured.

If you do find a sick or injured dog or have concerns about a dog’s welfare, you can phone the SSPCA at 03000 999 999.

There may be occasions when there is no service available to collect the dog, and you may wish to take the dog in until you get a response. Ensure your own safety is not compromised when approaching an unknown dog. Fear can lead to aggression or unpredictable behaviour, causing a dog to lash out. Remain calm and seek help if you can.

Do not follow a dog into a dangerous situation! Phone the police if you are unsure.

In Scotland, when a local authority Dog Warden Service is not available, you can take a stray dog to your nearest staffed police station where it may be taken in and given to the Dog Warden when that service resumes. This is not the case in England and Wales.
